David Ames Furniture Maker & Wood Sculptor &

Hello, I’m david.

I’ve been making bespoke furniture to commission at my workshop in North Devon, for over 20 years and have made many beautiful and diverse pieces of furniture for discerning patrons.

I’ve now turned my focus towards creating more decorative items for the home such as wood sculptures and unique small pieces of furniture that will enhance even the smallest of spaces.

You can purchase my latest work here in my shop.

My Story

I’ve always enjoyed working with wood, I remember making a dolls clothes wardrobe for my little sister when I was still quite a young boy and I inherited my grandfather's chisels which I still use to this day! After a career in industrial design I got back to making in wood when I moved to North Devon 25 years ago with my wife Rosie. A new life deep in the countryside really changed the direction of my life from working with plastic throw away products to crafting beautiful pieces using the natural features of the material. There’s something wonderfully satisfying about wood and being able to make with it.

I love trees and the one-off characteristics of wood. The great maker George Nakashima once said “A tree is our most intimate contact with nature”.

I'm always on the lookout for interesting pieces of wood, on the beaches, in the hills, in timber yards and reclamation sheds.

Once I've got them home I can spend endless hours in my workshop contemplating how I will put them together to make a piece of useful furniture or a sculpture telling a story.

My sea stories, for instance, are created using found materials from the beaches and coves and combining them with freshly sculpted wood. Each sculpture seems to naturally come together.

I use the natural edges and holes in the wood carefully sculpting and cleaning, planing and sawing, chiseling and sanding, oiling and waxing to coax out the beauty that lies within.

Where the reclaimed timber has years of paint layers, old nail holes, sea salted cracks, I just let it be and tell its own story.
